The Marine Mammal Database
The concept of a Mediterranean basin-wide marine mammal database was conceived to collect data and references related to marine mammal distribution, behavior, and biocoustics and to ultimately determine areas of high and low marine mammal density. Based on this information, at-sea experiments using active sonar could then be conducted in areas of low density.
The marine mammal database has expended outside of the Mediterranean and now includes:
- Thousands of historical sightings and strandings of Mediterranean
species since 1950
- Sightings, passive acoustic detections, and environmental data acquired
during the Sirena cruises and other NATO Undersea Research Centre sea
trials
- Sightings, photographs, passive acoustic detections, and sound samples
provided by Centro Interdisciplinare di Bioacustica e Ricerche Ambientali
(University of Pavia)
- Sighting data from our international partners
